If you’re a parent, ask your kid to friend you (Chapter 3) so you can see what she’s up to. Then tweak your settings (Chapter 5) to maximize the chance that if your daughter posts, say, a picture of herself at a concert that was held the night she was supposed to be home studying, you’ll hear about it.

You taught your kids how to use a fork, and you need to teach your children how to act online, too—because, statistically speaking, they don’t know. Studies show that most teens take what they read online at face value; don’t realize that people outside their circle of friends can see what they put on Facebook; and routinely post inappropriate info, such as their home addresses. And this kind of behavior can have serious consequences, from cyber-bullying and cyber-stalking to lowered grades and job prospects (teachers and recruiters know how to use Facebook, too—and what your child posts today will be archived forever). If you’re a student, you need to know how to keep your private life private on Facebook. You absolutely, positively need to read Chapter 13 and work through your privacy settings one by one. After you’ve done that, amp up your privacy by:

Keeping it clean. Facebook archives everything you put on the site, so the stuff you intended as a joke could cause you a lot of grief in a few years when, say, you meet the love of your life—or the recruiter for your dream job.
Going easy on the pix. Don’t upload pictures that show you having more fun than you ought to have. Doesn’t matter if you yank ’em down after your pals get a look: The instant you upload a picture, Facebook owns it and some alert somebody could save a copy and email it to everyone in existence before you remove it.
Assuming your profs, parents, best friend, and worst enemy can see everything you post. There are a lot of ways people can get access to your Facebook account, so don’t assume that only your best buds can see what you do on the site—even if you tweaked your privacy settings, because those settings change over time and there’s always a hack.

If you’re a teacher, don’t bother trying to use Facebook to teach. No study yet has shown that the site can be used effectively in education—and anecdotal evidence suggests that it can’t. Students tend to think of Facebook as “their” place, not an exciting extension to the classroom, and there’s little (if anything) you can do on Facebook that you can’t accomplish behind a lectern.

However, if you’re having trouble contacting students via email or phone—to remind them of an assignment coming due, for example—try befriending them on Facebook, adding them to a Friend List (Chapter 3), and sending them Messages (Chapter 4). If your students are college age, you’ll likely get quicker responses that way.

While you’re on Facebook, take a few minutes to peruse the profiles of any students riding the line between grades. You may be surprised at how many students whose grandmothers’ sudden illnesses prevented them from taking your final somehow had time to post wild party photos from (one can only conclude) Grandma’s bedside.

how to disable, delete, and edit Group Chat in Facebook

When Facebook launched the revamped groups, many of us were pretty excited. Though the initial fervor has died down somewhat, Groups are still going strong and continue to annoy people who haven’t been able to use their Facebook chat since the introduction.

However, in response to a massive user push (and apparently a thread on Quora), Facebook has given us the ability to opt out of Group Chat just by going to your Edit Settings button on a group’s page. So, instead of being a blanket response to all of your groups, you’re able to control who you get chats from and who you don’t.

I add some of applications in Facebook in my profile and my fan page. I test some applications that works fine and good. I also developed application in my RSS BLOG please add it . I see that there are a lot of great apps available to help you improve the user experience, so I thought I’d share a few of my own favorites. Here are my top five … what application or fan page apps top your list?

NetworkedBlogs
One of my favorite Facebook apps for fan pages and personal profiles is NetworkedBlogs. If you have a blog and want to add the feed to you page, this is one of the best ways to do it. It’s fairly simple to setup, and allows you to import your feed directory to your page. The app also adds your blog to a directory of blogs organized by topic and geographical locations.

NutshellMail
Last week, I wrote about how NutshellMail is a gem when it comes to managing the “noise” of social media and zeroing in on only the information you want to keep track of. One of the best features of NutshellMail is the Facebook email newsletter feature. Adding this app to your fan page will create an opt-in area where fans can sign up to get automatic notifications of fan page activity.

Static FBML
If you had to pick only one app for your fan page, Static FBML is the one to pick. Static FBML is an app that was developed by Facebook to allow users to add advanced functionality to their pages using JavaScript, CSS, HTML and FBML (Facebook Markup Language). While it’s not exactly like coding a non-Facebook site, you have a lot of flexibility for adding some great user-focused content, such as a Welcome page, a contact form or other opt-in and even a mini web site.

Twitter
If you have a Twitter profile that relates to your fan page, you can easily add the Twitter app so everything you post on your fan page (or just the items you select) are automatically shared on your Twitter account. This is a great way to create a crossover that expands your reach in both networks.

YouTube Video Box
I talked about the power of online videos in a previous post. If you use videos to enrich the user experience on your web site or blog, you can carry that engagement over to your fan page with YouTube Video Box. This app integrates your YouTube account directly into your Facebook fan page, and allows you to add videos, search, and make it easy for fans to watch and share your videos.

I will teach you how to add custom tabs in your Facebook page. I will give two option the STATIC FBML and pagemodo.com applications which allows anyone to create a Welcome page through a nicely done generator that is very simple to use.

You can customize your page with tabs to make the user experience more fun.

I add a “Website” tab so that their those that like your page can suggest it easily to their friends. There are a bunch of reasons you may want to add one, and here is how you do it.

2. Using Static FBML Facebook application

When you are logged into Facebook, install the Static FBML Facebook application on your fan page by selecting “Add To My Page”. FBML stands for Facebook Markup Language. It is “an evolved subset of html”, which basically means you can add certain html code to your Facebook tab.

A pop up window will appear that lets you select the page you wish to add it to. Make your selection and select “Add To Page”.

Now, you must edit the FBML Tab you just added. To do this, go back to your fan page and select “Edit Page”

On your admin page, scroll down until you find the FBML Application. When you find it, select “edit”

In the “Box Title” enter the name you want displayed as the name of your tab. In this example I will choose “Blog Roll”. Inside the FMBL page, you will enter the html code. Here are some common html codes you might use:

once the FBML code is ready select “Save Changes”. Return to your admin page ( select “edit page” on your Facebook page) and then find your new tab you created. Select “Application Settings”. When you get the pop up box, change your Profile settings to:

This will make the tab appear on your main fan page with the name you chose. You de-select the “box”, so you do not have it on your page twice. Select “Okay” and return to your main fan page and see your new tab!

Facebook launches ‘permissions’ for apps, websites

NEW YORK – Facebook is rolling out a new feature that requires outside applications and websites to tell users exactly what parts of their profiles have to be shared for the apps to work.
Applications already had to ask users for permission to access anything in their profiles that wasn’t public. But these services didn’t have to specify what information they were using. Such information can include your photos, your friends’ birthdays or your e-mail address.

Under the new policy, the services will say which aspects of a profile they will mine, but the user still won’t be able to pick out which pieces they want to grant access to. They have to either grant permission or disallow the app from working at all.

The world’s largest online social network announced the change in April. It’s part of Facebook’s cooperation with Canada’ privacy commissioner, who has been among the sharpest critics of the company’s privacy policies.

Facebook has come under fire for the way it treats the information its nearly 500 million users post on the site. Most recently, privacy advocates and lawmakers have complained about Facebook’s “instant personalization” feature, which draws information from users’ profiles to customize a handful of other sites, including review site Yelp and the music service Pandora.

Partly because of criticism and partly because of the site’s growth from a small network for college students, Facebook’s privacy settings became complicated and often confusing over the years.
