The recent sale of sex.com, brokered by domain marketplace operator Sedo, has resulted in a Guinness World Record for “most expensive internet address domain name”.

Sex.com was sold for $13 million by Escom to Clover Holdings on 17 November 2010.

To put this in some context: in its 10 years of existence, Sedo says it has brokered about $400 million worth of domain names, including a number of other seven-figure transactions for premium domains such as Vodka.com, Pizza.com and Russia.com.

Needless to say, the Guinness World Record will only further strengthen the notion of sex.com being the most valuable domain name on the Internet, although we should note that there’s always a slight chance a higher price for another domain name was paid at some point, in a private transaction.[ad code=1 align=center]

From:http://techcrunch.com/2011/01/04/so-you-just-bought-sex-com-for-13-million-now-what/

sex.com website

Sex.com brings in quite some money even now that it’s still parked. In fact, he claims the placeholder website receives more than 125,000 visitors on a daily basis, from all over the world (but mostly from the United States, India and Germany).[ad code=3 align=center]

The ad-littered parking page was set up as a placeholder while he figured out how best to develop the domain name, but the revenues he’s received from Sex.com already far exceed his expectations – he wouldn’t provide more details, but says the page is on track to return well into seven figures a year.

That means that even if Jeff ends up never doing anything with it other than forwarding the domain name to a parked page, he could potentially still make $13 million from it by 2024, earning back his investment.

Obviously, that’s not his goal. There are lots of opportunities to develop a domain name like Sex.com in my mind, adult businesses being an obvious choice. However, Jeff says he’s gotten a handful of interesting offers from mainstream media companies, technology companies and even one from the pharmaceutical industry so far. He hasn’t made up his mind on how to proceed with the commercialization of the domain name yet, but Jeff adds that he and his team have a deadline they’re working towards.

But today, agile web development practices mean that you can almost launch on an idea and figure it out as you go. At least that’s what authors Jason Glaspey and Scott Kveton and their colleague Michael Richardson did when starting bacn.com, an online bacon retailer.

In this mouth-watering tale, they describe their process of starting a business on a shoestring, including the things they did right and the things they did wrong. Bacn.com didn’t make them millionaires — not even close! But the lessons they learned have led to comfortable success on their follow-up ventures. And whether it’s choosing a domain name or selecting the right content management systems, buying and storing inventory or figuring out fulfillment, using social media for marketing or finding a location to host an “epic” party, their stories will help you jumpstart your own web business.[ad code=1 align=center]

About the Author
Jason Glaspey is a freelance interactive producer who works with a wide range of clients creating interactive content. Jason has been building websites and online tools for himself for years now as a way to escape the client work that kept him busy during the day. By constantly fiddling and testing opportunities online, he’s continuously refined the way in which new businesses are created in a day where much of what you need can be acquired with a laptop and an internet connection. His professional experience consists of global brands such as Nike, Burton Snowboards, Starbucks, and Nokia, to small local companies native to his hometown of Portland, Oregon.

Scott Kveton is an entrepreneur who lives and works in Portland, Oregon. He is currently the co-founder and CEO a mobile phone infrstructure company called Urban Airship and has been active with a variety of startups and open source/standards groups over the past 15 years. Beyond technology, Scott is an avid gardener, from-scratch pizza maker and of course, bacon lover.

One of the purposes of seo services is to support the notion that the computer programming can also be linked to the marketing elements of the usage. The product is focused on the ability to market different products so the natural listings. The natural listings involve the many web pages that are indexed by the major search engines. Google happens to be the most dominant in this perspective but it is closely followed by Yahoo and then MSN which has now turned into LIVE. The technical development concentrates on the possibility of putting the products on the front line of the listings. In most cases the top page is the aim. That is about the top ten listings. If the management of the program has been particularly effective it is important to have the same website with listings on different products on the engines. This is a rare occurrence that is soon cancelled out by the efforts of the rivals who make it their business to get to the top.

[ad code=3 align=center]

The skills that are required to deliver this support are not too technical that they are beyond the reach of the programmers that do other activities that are associated with the internet. There are many website owners that have decided that it is in their interest to study the details of how the engines operate so that they can carry out specific campaigns with the purpose of ensuring that they are at the top of the game when it comes to search engine advertising. This sort of DIY process has been very effective in controlling the marketing budget. The outsourcing of this service is always problematic because it creates assumptions that are just not sustainable in the real world. It is better to work on the premise that the individual website owner can do the work if they undertake the relevant training. The benefits of the program justify the investment.

[ad code=1 align=center]

The strict competition within the online market has pushed the participants to constantly improve the way that they deal with the engines. They are always finding new methods of ensuring that they are ahead of the game. In some instances this competition has led to the unsavory methods that are referred as Black Hat. These might deliver some short term results but they cannot deliver the long term that is needed to ensure that the person is enjoying the very best of offerings. It is one of the most effective marketing tools because it does not necessary require high investment outlay. Some of the smallest websites have been able to make a very strong impact by just being there. They work through the system until they get the kinds of results that they are hoping for. This gives them the edge against the larger websites that do not care for the detail. This is work that requires dedication on the part of the person that is managing the program. It also needs a concentration on the priorities at the time.

About the Author
Curt Christianson has been involved in the tech community since the mid 1990s and has been a professional developer for more than a decade. He is an active community contributor on the Asp.net forums as well as a Forum Moderator. He is currently in his 6th Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award cycle for his work with ASP/ASP.Net. He is writing a number of open source add-ins and Starter Kits. He’s based in Wisconsin, U.S.A. as a professional developer as well as contributing to books and articles, both printed and on the Internet.

Curt is in the process of entering into the life of a married man thanks to his better half Jessyca. They plan on settling down with lots of little ones running around, providing the mosquitoes don’t carry them all off first or the winter chill doesn’t get them.

Jeff Cochran is a Senior Network Specialist for the City of Naples, Florida. A large part of his job includes web design and coding, as well as web server management. Jeff has nearly two decades of experience with the Internet, having started one of the first Internet Service Providers in Southwest Florida, and has worked with Windows and Unix-based web servers. Now primarily concentrating on Windows technologies, Jeff has been a Microsoft MVP for Microsoft’s Internet Information Server for nearly a decade and is active in the ASP Classic and ASP.NET communities as well.

Jeff has been married for twenty years to Zina, a graphic designer and, according to most accounts, the driving force that keeps him focused on… Oh look – A Pony! In the off-hours, Jeff and Zina spend much of their time remodeling a 1950s bungalow in Naples, Florida, trying to keep the rain out and the cats in. Jeff also has a long-term addiction to classic pinball machines, tropical fish, and off-road vehicles, all of which compete with home repairs for a share of his income.

Things that a web developer should do for the client (or their own website), as part of the job.

The basic rules here are:

Help them by getting it right from the start.

You’re the expert so you should know about and be doing this stuff.

Don’t wait until they ask for things that should already have been done correctly.

1. Make and set up a 404 error page (and any other likely error messages/handlers)

The default 404 error page on most sites is abysmal offering absolutely no help to the user.

Introduced to client that 404 error page is one of the most important also in a website.

2. Install a favicon.

Even if it’s a generic one though it’s much more impressive for the client of you actually create one from their logo. Why important? Saves 404 errors in the logs and looks nice as well (on Mozilla and Opera anyway, IE seems to have lost the plot on this even though they used to have it right).

[ad code=3 align=center]

Installing favicon make website professional, unique and corporate .

3. Install a robots.txt file

Again, even if it just has “User-agent: *” (or even just a # comment) it will at least save the 404 errors from robots looking for it. Better still add the dirs or files you don’t want indexed by robots to it.

robot.txt used in SEO and helps also in the website

4. When setting up the DNS, check it to see that there are no errors.

It’s amazing how many errors are out there in DNS records. Here’s a great free tool for you to play with.http://dnsreport.com/

5. Set up the email server correctly.

Help to set up emails like in Outlook.

6. Domain forwarding and email addresses.

This work can be done in cpanel side the client must know how it works also.

7. Adding Metadata

Make sure all your metadata is in place and where required unique on every page in the site. This is a workflow and template issue. We have a base template that we start every site with, or at least take the essentials from.

8. Validate the whole site

Validate the website in some error.

9. Document your code and script used

Make a documentation of the website always

10. Make Statistics

Teach some statistics like google analytics .

[ad code=1 align=center]
