An F visa is the way many freelancers go. To get the visa through the official channels, you’ll need a letter of invitation from a company. This shouldn’t be too difficult if you’ve already lined up some freelance work. Otherwise, there are agencies that will get you an F visa at extra cost, but it isn’t entirely above board.
Invoicing and tax
As for invoicing and tax, if you sign a contract as an individual and invoice monthly, the company will sort out your tax payments for you. If you earn below 5000 RMB per month, you don’t have to pay tax. This sort of arrangement works well if you are a low- to mid-range earner, but if you want to make big bucks working for large companies, you should consider setting up a Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise. A WFOE is a limited company owned in full by a non-native, and allows you to trade, manufacture and consult. Something else to bear in mind when going freelance is organisation. Working for more than one company can get confusing, especially when it comes to invoicing, so make sure you have a spreadsheet, and sort your email into folders for each company or project.
Finding work

A good, specialised website to try is FreelancerChina.com – the self-professed “largest outsourcing platform in China”. Companies post ads for jobs and projects, which freelancers then bid for. Payment is processed using escrow. It only takes a couple of minutes to sign up, and is very easy to use. Networking events are another good source of clients, and there’s a lot to be said for word of mouth. For modeling and acting work, job boards are a fertile field as well, as many agents and representatives advertise for new talent.
Of course, freelancing is riskier and less reliable than working full time for a single company, but the rewards are plentiful if you play your cards right.

With more web browsers supporting open web standards and companies chucking outsupport for proprietary software in favor of open technologies, there is a stronger demand — more than ever — for coders that are able to work with web standards well.

There’s a HECK of a lot to learn to be able to do web development effectively. Just to be ABLE to do it, you have to learn:

HTML
CSS
PHP or some other server-side language

To do it EFFECTIVELY, you’ve got a lot more to learn:

SQL
JavaScript
libraries and frameworks
a bug tracking system
Subversion or some other revision control system
IDEs
other tools
Apache
Linux command line

To do it WELL, there’s even more:

usability
unobtrusive JavaScript
separation of concerns (MVC, etc)
testing
customer relations
HTTP protocol
AJAX

I think that skipping PHP and the others and going straight to Rails is a good idea. Maybe. At least if he’s talented. But he’ll still have to learn a lot of things before he’s any good at creating a site. (Don’t forget that we found Rails easy to learn because we already knew a lot about web development.) He’ll still have to understand HTML and CSS. The Agile Web Development with Rails books is excellent, but it takes a lot to get through. If you’re the type who can read a manual to learn how to do something, then it’s fine. But if you need to start out with a tutorial, then you’ll need to start with a different book. If you do go this route, I’d recommend learning in this order:

HTML
CSS
Apache (as little as possible to get 2 virtual hosts running)
Rails
Subversion
Test-Driven Development
Ruby
SQL

If you want to make a living at it, I’d expect it to take at least a year of full-time (self-)education. Everyone learns differently, so it’s hard to recommend learning materials. I’ll offer some ideas though:

books (my favorite; I look for conciseness)
formal training classes
(community) college classes
local user groups (attend if topic is pertinent)
online videos/screencasts
podcasts
web tutorials
blogs (hard to get the basics though)
personalized training
mentoring

If he just wants to play around, I suppose the order is not as important. Learn things as they interest you. Eventually, you’ll find you’ve learned a ton and enjoyed doing it.

Ever wonder how to get started making your own website? It seems everyone has a website, but few can go beyond the pre-set templates. Here’s how to do it yourself and RIGHT!

Step 1

The Very First Thing Is To Learn HTML! A lot of places will try and sell you either on templates (Choose one of 3 lovely colors!) or a visual editor, such as Dreamweaver (which makes such a mess, even professional coders have trouble reading the code, let alone editing it). HTML is really a very simple coding language that once learned is very versatile and easy to incorporate.

Please, don’t be afraid of HTML! It really isn’t as intimidating as you’d think. At it’s most basic, it’s simple plain text files with a set of characters that have a special meaning. Try starting with Elizabeth Castro’s book, “HTML, XHTML & CSS. Step 2

Find a good online tutoring site on HTML and/or pick up books at the library. There are plenty of great tutorial sites around but probably the best is W3 Schools – check out the link below. They offer – “Web Building Tutorials – All Free” and they are easy to use. I am a regular visitor to the library and the librarians laughingly call for the book cart when they see me walk in so I can cart my requested items to the car – but it’s probably not worth buying a book on HTML since it’s a rather simple technology. Once you’ve learned the basics, there are a lot of great references online to remind you of whatever crucial piece of HTML code you might need. You can also save specifics to a cd such as color chart codes, etc. W3 Schools have full reference libraries for any coding types. There are tons of sources though – so go explore!
Step 3

Set up a practice website. Pick a subject you love and play with it! Seeing a site develop while you are actually learning how to make it
can be incredibly motivating and enjoyable! Have fun! Pick something you never get tired of and you may end up with a site that everyone goes to check out!
Step 4

Once you have a site that you wish people to see, you’ll want to put it up for display on the Big Wild Web. For this, you’ll need to upload your web files to a Webserver. There are plenty of free web hosts around – check the links below for two of the best. Just sign up with one of these great hosts. They have incredibly easy guides to help you get your files uploaded and your website up & running fast & easy! If you have any problems, they are easy to contact via their ticket systems and they get back to you within 24 hours. There is very little downtime on either one of these hosting services, too, so you can depend on your site getting up and staying up. If your site is a viable business, you should register a domain name for it and pay for a hosting service that offers a lot more services like bigger files sizes, more bandwidth, and a method for payment of any goods you may want to sell.
Step 5

At this point you may wish to extend you knowledge to improve the look and feel of your page design. Learn CSS – Cascading Style Sheets – which is an addition to HTML, and coded in exactly the same way. W3 schools have some great tutorials on CSS but a good reference book on the subject might be worth investing in. Request tutorial books from your local library first to see if this is an aspect of coding that you want to learn more about.

Step 6
